.30 Picra Load Data

Caliber Overview

The caliber .30 PICRA occupies a distinctive place in the realm of precision shooting and custom wildcat cartridges, developed primarily for rifle shooters seeking performance improvements over standard factory rounds. Originating from the collaboration between firearms and ballistics experts in the Czech Republic, the PICRA was conceived with intent to maximize long-range accuracy, energy retention, and adaptability for both target and hunting applications. It gained popularity among European shooters and experimental reloaders who appreciated its careful engineering and the unique ballistic advantages it could offer compared to more commercial .30 caliber rounds.

Over time, the .30 PICRA has found its niche among advanced marksmen and reloaders who are open to wildcat cartridges. Its applications extend across a variety of shooting disciplines, particularly in long-range target competitions where accuracy and consistency are paramount. The cartridge’s finely-tuned dimensions and chamber specifications make it an attractive option for benchrest shooting as well as spirited long-range varminting and hunting. Due to its wildcat status, the .30 PICRA is seldom found in factory ammunition catalogs, relying instead on devoted hobbyists and reloaders to tailor its performance for precision rifles and specific roles.

When it comes to hunting, the .30 PICRA is suitable for a range of mid-sized game, closely mirroring the performance envelope of other respectable .30 caliber cartridges like the .308 Winchester and .30-06 Springfield. Typical target species include deer, roe deer, and wild boar, particularly in regions where European traditions and regulations guide caliber selection. Its robust sectional density and high ballistic coefficients also make it appropriate for longer shots in open terrain, where drop and wind drift become critical factors. Reloaders favor it for providing a balance of manageable recoil and stopping power, which translates into ethical kills and excellent accuracy.

The .30 PICRA accepts standard .308-inch diameter bullets, allowing reloaders to choose from a broad array of projectile types and weights. Commonly, bullet weights from 150 to 180 grains are utilized, depending on the intended purpose. Lighter bullets are preferred for target shooting and smaller game, producing flatter trajectories, while heavier bullets are used where deeper penetration or knockdown power is needed for large game. The case design allows for efficient powder usage and consistent performance, making it responsive to careful handloading practices. The cartridge’s unique headspacing and functional characteristics demand precise case preparation and loading attention, but in return, it offers exceptional accuracy potential and performance for those willing to invest the effort.

For reloaders, the .30 PICRA represents an opportunity to fine-tune performance beyond commonly available .30 calibers while taking advantage of the extensive bullet selections and reloading components on the market. Its solid accuracy reputation, reliable terminal ballistics, and adaptability for both target and hunting scenarios ensure it remains a respected choice among those passionate about ballistic experimentation and custom rifle shooting.
