6.5 x 47 Lapua Load Data

Caliber Overview

The 6.5 x 47 Lapua was introduced in 2005 as a joint development by Lapua and Grunig & Elmiger for the growing precision rifle market. Designed with competitive shooting in mind, this cartridge quickly gained traction among F-Class, benchrest, and long-range precision rifle enthusiasts. Its arrival was timely, coinciding with the rise in popularity of 6.5mm cartridges, which have become a mainstay in precision shooting due to their high ballistic coefficients and optimal case design. The 6.5 x 47 Lapua was intended to address some limitations observed in other calibers such as the .308 Winchester, particularly regarding recoil and barrel life, and it carved out a distinct reputation for consistent accuracy.

In terms of applications, the 6.5 x 47 Lapua thrives in both competitive and practical scenarios. On the match circuit, it’s lauded for delivering exceptional accuracy and low recoil, making it such an attractive choice for PRS (Precision Rifle Series), F-Class, and tactical shooting disciplines. The superior case design allows for efficient powder burn, extended primer pocket life, and easy case resizing for reloaders, all contributing to its reliability as a match cartridge. Practical shooters see the 6.5 x 47 Lapua as a versatile round for both competition and training, while professional marksmen value its predictability and excellent terminal performance in tactical applications.

When it comes to target species, the 6.5 x 47 Lapua is best suited for medium game animals and target shooting. Its flat trajectory and retained energy make it suitable for hunting deer, roe buck, and other similarly sized species at medium to long ranges, although its primary following remains among target shooters. Hunters in Europe have employed it successfully for roe deer and chamois, while in North America, it’s mostly seen at the range rather than in the field. Its gentle recoil and exceptional accuracy lend the cartridge well to both novice and experienced shooters aiming for high-precision shooting at extended distances.

Typical bullet weights for the 6.5 x 47 Lapua range from 120 to 140 grains, with 123 and 139-grain match bullets from manufacturers like Lapua and Berger being especially popular. These weights take full advantage of the caliber’s balance between velocity and ballistic coefficient, enabling shooters to reach distant targets while minimizing wind drift and trajectory drop. The caliber features a relatively short, efficient case—with a length of 47mm—that optimizes powder capacity for stable velocity and easy tunability by reloaders. Its small rifle primer pocket is known for handling high pressures and maintaining primer pocket integrity over multiple reloads. Combined with Lapua’s reputation for case quality, the 6.5 x 47 Lapua has cemented its place as a top choice among meticulous handloaders seeking repeatable precision, longevity, and competitive performance.
