The 6.5-06 Ackley Improved (6.5-06 AI) is a high-performance wildcat rifle cartridge derived from the .30-06 Springfield case necked down to accept 6.5 mm (.264-inch) bullets and then “improved” using P.O. Ackley’s design principles. Compared to the standard 6.5-06, the Ackley Improved version features a much steeper shoulder—typically around 40 degrees—and reduced body taper. These changes increase usable case capacity, improve powder efficiency, and reduce case stretching during firing.
The 6.5-06 AI is capable of driving long, high-ballistic-coefficient 6.5 mm bullets at impressive velocities, often exceeding the standard 6.5-06 by roughly 50–150 feet per second when loaded safely. This makes it well suited for long-range shooting and hunting medium to large game where flat trajectory, retained velocity, and penetration are important. With bullet weights commonly ranging from 120 to 147 grains, the cartridge takes full advantage of modern 6.5 mm projectile design.
Like most Ackley Improved cartridges, the 6.5-06 AI is primarily a handloader’s round. Standard 6.5-06 ammunition can be safely fired in an Ackley Improved chamber to form brass, but dedicated load development is required. The result is a powerful, efficient, and distinctive cartridge that maximizes the potential of the classic .30-06 case.
