The .445 SuperMag is a powerful revolver cartridge developed in the late 1970s by Elgin Gates as part of his SuperMag series, designed to extend the performance of traditional magnum handgun rounds. Based on a lengthened .44 Magnum case, the .445 SuperMag measures approximately 1.6 inches in case length, allowing for significantly greater powder capacity and higher velocities. It fires standard .429 caliber bullets, typically ranging from 180 to 300 grains, making it compatible with a wide range of existing .44-caliber projectiles.
The primary advantage of the .445 SuperMag is its increased velocity and energy compared to the .44 Magnum, particularly when used in long-barreled revolvers such as those produced by Dan Wesson. This makes it well-suited for handgun hunting and metallic silhouette shooting, where flat trajectory and strong downrange performance are important. The cartridge can also chamber and safely fire .44 Magnum and .44 Special rounds in compatible firearms, adding versatility for practice and lower-recoil shooting.
Despite its performance benefits, the .445 SuperMag remains a niche cartridge, with limited factory ammunition availability. It is primarily used by enthusiasts and reloaders who appreciate its blend of power, flexibility, and compatibility with established .44-caliber components.
