.35 Rem. Load Data

Caliber Overview

The .35 Remington cartridge, commonly referred to as .35 Rem., holds a respected place in the history of American hunting ammunition. Introduced by Remington Arms in 1906 for their then-new Model 8 semi-automatic rifle, the .35 Rem. emerged during an era of innovation and fierce competition among ammunition makers. Its parent case was unique, created specifically for the line of Remington autoloaders, offering a rimless, bottlenecked profile that distinguished it from many other American cartridges of the time. While its direct competitors included cartridges like the .30-30 Winchester and .32 Winchester Special, the .35 Rem. found a loyal following due to its reliable performance and adaptability in both autoloading and lever-action rifles. Over the decades, numerous manufacturers chambered rifles for this caliber, solidifying its reputation as a versatile woods cartridge.

Throughout its long tenure, the .35 Rem. has been predominantly used for medium game hunting, particularly in the dense forests of the eastern United States. Its moderate recoil and proven effectiveness at short to medium ranges make it a favored choice among hunters pursuing deer, black bear, and even hogs. The cartridge’s ballistics, falling between that of the .30-30 Winchester and larger bore rounds, grants it a notable advantage in terms of knockdown power without excessive felt recoil. Many lever-action enthusiasts, especially Marlin 336 owners, continue to praise the .35 Rem. for its brush-busting ability, as its heavier bullets retain momentum and withstand light cover better than many lighter, smaller-caliber alternatives.

In terms of target species, the .35 Rem. excels for North American big game up to the size of black bear. Hunters have successfully utilized it for white-tailed deer, where its comparatively heavy, wide-diameter bullet delivers reliable expansion and energy transfer for clean kills, even on less-than-perfectly placed shots. Its capabilities extend to feral hogs and coyotes, and in some regions, it’s been used for elk, although this is generally at shorter ranges and with careful shot placement. The relatively modest velocities and limited trajectory compared to modern high-velocity cartridges mean that intended targets are best engaged within 200 yards, where the round performs optimally.

Regarding reloading and cartridge characteristics, the .35 Rem. typically utilizes bullet weights ranging from 180 to 220 grains, with the 200-grain soft point being the most popular factory and handload choice for hunting applications. These bullets are generally of flat or round-nosed profile to accommodate the tubular magazines common in Marlin lever-action rifles, reducing the risk of accidental primer ignition. Reloaders appreciate the cartridge for its forgiving nature and the availability of a range of suitable bullets from major manufacturers such as Hornady, Speer, and Sierra. The .35 Rem. is characterized by its ease of case resizing, moderate powder charges, and good brass life, making it both cost-effective and rewarding for those who handload. Its rimless case design allows for reliable feeding in both autoloaders and lever-actions, further contributing to its enduring popularity with reloaders seeking a powerful and practical medium-bore round for hunting and target shooting alike.
