.308 Marlin Express Load Data

Caliber Overview

Introduced in 2007, the .308 Marlin Express was developed by Marlin Firearms and Hornady Manufacturing as a response to the demand for a high-velocity, flat-shooting cartridge suitable for lever-action rifles. Its inception came as an answer to those who desired the performance of popular long-range cartridges, like the .308 Winchester, from a traditional lever-action platform. Utilizing advancements in case design and propellant technology, the .308 Marlin Express offers modern ballistic performance, while maintaining the classic aesthetics and reliability of lever-action rifles. It is based on a modified .307 Winchester case, strengthened and slightly altered for use with Hornady’s Flex Tip (FTX) bullets, which improve ballistic coefficients and provide safe feeding in tubular magazines.

The primary application of the .308 Marlin Express lies in medium-game hunting, where its higher velocities and energy deliver outstanding terminal performance at extended ranges compared to older lever-action cartridges such as the .30-30 Winchester. Thanks to its streamlined, pointed FTX bullets, the round maintains flatter trajectories, enhancing accuracy and effective range. Ammunition reloaders appreciate the cartridge for providing .308-class performance from lever guns, making it a popular choice for hunters who love the classic lever-action but require more power and range. The round’s compatibility with lever-action rifles also means quick cycling and follow-up shots, advantageous for game hunting in dense woods or brush.

When it comes to target species, the .308 Marlin Express is ideal for North American deer species such as whitetail and mule deer, as well as black bear and feral hogs. Its energy retention ensures effective penetration and expansion at extended distances, making it capable for both open-field and woodland settings. While it can be used for larger game like elk under optimal circumstances and with proper shot placement, many hunters prefer reserving it for deer-sized or slightly larger animals within ethical hunting ranges. Its accurate, fast, and hard-hitting profile has earned positive feedback among lever-action enthusiasts targeting mid-sized game.

Typical bullet weights for the .308 Marlin Express hover around 160 grains, specifically tailored for Hornady FTX projectiles. Bullet selections are largely designed for tubular magazine safety and optimal terminal effect at extended ranges. Muzzle velocities generally range between 2,600 and 2,700 feet per second, granting significantly improved ballistics over traditional lever-action rounds. The cartridge’s overall length and case dimensions are designed to reliably feed in lever actions while withstanding increased chamber pressures, providing shooters with modern rifle performance in a nostalgic package. For reloaders, this caliber demands attention to bullet design and seating depth due to tubular magazine specifics, but rewards with versatility and power suited for a wide array of North American hunting scenarios.
