Caliber Overview

The .24 Nosler is a relatively new addition to the world of high-performance rifle cartridges, introduced by Nosler as a versatile option for shooters seeking a balance between long-range accuracy and manageable recoil. Drawing from their extensive experience in cartridge development, Nosler unveiled the .24 caliber (.243” diameter) cartridge to cater specifically to marksmen and hunters who wanted something more than the long-established .243 Winchester but without stepping up to the recoil of larger 6.5mm or .270 caliber cartridges. The .24 Nosler was designed during the era of heightened interest in high-BC projectiles and efficiency, capitalizing on modern powders and bullet technology to deliver exceptional ballistics and accuracy.

For applications, the .24 Nosler shines as an all-around cartridge well-suited for both precision target shooting and medium game hunting. Precision rifle competitors and varmint hunters appreciate the cartridge’s flat trajectory and consistent performance at extended ranges, making it a compelling choice for shooting disciplines where high accuracy and minimal wind drift are paramount. For field use, the .24 Nosler is particularly favored in areas where medium-sized game like deer, antelope, or coyote are common quarry. Its mild recoil compared to larger magnum cartridges allows for quick follow-up shots and improved shooter comfort, a valuable trait for both seasoned and new hunters alike. The .24 Nosler remains a flexible chambering, appealing to AR-15-style rifle users as well as those with bolt-action platforms.

When it comes to target species, the .24 Nosler is primarily selected for hunting medium game and as a dedicated varmint cartridge. The .243 caliber diameter provides ample knockdown power without excessive over-penetration, which is ideal for ethically taking animals such as whitetail deer, mule deer, pronghorn antelope, and a wide variety of predators like coyotes and bobcats. Varmint hunters also appreciate the flat shooting nature of the .24 Nosler for pest control at considerable distances, making it a favorite in prairie dog towns and for long-range groundhog shooting. The cartridge is also gaining a reputation in the competitive shooting scene, where balance between velocity, ballistic coefficient, and recoil makes it a natural fit for multi-stage matches and long-range target competitions.

Typical bullet weights for the .24 Nosler generally range from 55 to 108 grains, offering reloaders a wide spectrum to tailor loads for their intended application. Lighter projectiles excel in varmint and predator control, providing high velocity and explosive terminal ballistics, while heavier bullets with high ballistic coefficients are better suited for long-range accuracy and medium game hunting. The cartridge is engineered to take full advantage of modern high-BC bullet designs, meaning reloaders can experiment with both flat-base and boat-tail bullets depending on shooting conditions and intended range. Cartridge case design features such as a sharp shoulder and ample powder capacity give the .24 Nosler impressive velocities out of both standard and longer barrels. Additionally, the overall length of the cartridge allows for optimal use in standard action rifles, contributing to its growing popularity among reloading and hunting communities alike.
