Bullets are lead-free and are made of copper- zinc alloy. The selected material provides an adequate deformation even at a lower impact velocities (500 m/s). The grooves on the bullet reduce the contact surface between the bullet and the rifle barrel, which reduce the pressure and increase the speed. The degree of deformation is determined by the depth of the hole at the top of the bullet. The tip is made of thermo-stable plastic that increases the ballistics as well as the terminal effect. At the impact, the bullet deforms into a mushroom shape of a double off the diameter off the caliber. A controlled and rapid expansion enables an effective transfer of energy from the bullet to the body of the game. All this together provide an extraordinary stopping effect, while at the same time keeps the games meat undamaged. Krop. covers 98 bullets from 27 manufacturers and a total of 6174 load recipes. Load Data Community Loads The 8x56mmR M 89, also referred to as the 8x56mmR Mannlicher or simply the 8x56R, is a rimmed rifle cartridge developed in the late 19th century by the prestigious Austrian designer Ferdinand Mannlicher. Originally adopted in 1888 for the Steyr-Mannlicher M1888 straight-pull bolt-action rifles, the cartridge underwent several evolutionary changes. Most notably, in 1930, Austria and Hungary adopted a new improved ‘S’ bullet, which resulted in changes to chamber dimensions and marked the beginning of widespread use under the M.30 (M 89 Port. Krop.) rifle variant. This cartridge served as the standard service round for Austro-Hungarian, Austrian, and Hungarian armed forces through World Wars I and II, before being gradually phased out after 1945 as economies standardized on more modern rimless calibers. Among ammunition reloaders and historical firearms enthusiasts, the 8x56mmR M 89 Port. Krop. remains a fascinating and practical choice. Its most common application is as a hunting cartridge and for target shooting, primarily in vintage rifles like the Mannlicher M95 straight-pull carbine and long rifle. Thanks to its solid ballistics and relatively soft recoil compared to contemporary full-power military rounds, it has also found a niche among collectors and competitors who appreciate the smooth operating mechanism of the Mannlicher rifles. Although factory ammunition is becoming scarcer, reloaders with a penchant for European military history enjoy crafting loads that evoke the spirit of the early 20th century. When it comes to hunting, the 8x56mmR Port. Krop. is frequently used for medium-sized game. In its heyday—and among modern reloaders—it is especially effective against deer, wild boar, and similar species across central and eastern Europe. The cartridge’s sectional density and energy deliver enough stopping power for these animals, while carefully selected modern soft-point bullets can optimize terminal performance. While it is no longer the first choice for large game or dangerous game hunting, responsible shot placement and bullet selection make it a solid performer for most deer-sized targets. The typical bullet weights for the 8x56mmR M 89 Port. Krop. are in the 208- to 208-grain range, with the original military rounds often featuring a .329" (8.32mm) diameter spitzer bullet. Muzzle velocities tend to hover around 2,030 to 2,250 feet per second, yielding energy levels comparable to other early 20th-century military cartridges. This rimmed design benefits from reliable extraction, especially in straight-pull actions, but it does present some challenges for consistent headspacing and feeding when compared to rimless cases. Ammunition reloaders prize the cartridge not only for its historical value, but also for the challenge of sourcing appropriate cases, bullets, and dies. Thankfully, with the increase in interest among collectors, specialty manufacturers and custom die makers have ensured that reloaders can still keep these classic rifles performing reliably for years to come.
