Caliber 9 X 57 R specifications drawing

Caliber Overview

The 9x57R is a classic German rimmed sporting cartridge and the rimmed counterpart of the 9x57 Mauser. Like its rimless sibling, it belongs to the cartridge family that grew out of the 7x57 Mauser case, with the case necked up to accept nine-millimetre projectiles. The addition of a rim made it a natural fit for break-action rifles, and the round was widely chambered in German drillings, combination guns, single-shot rifles and double rifles from the late nineteenth century onward. For many years it served as a practical all-round cartridge for the Central European hunter, bridging the gap between small rimmed deer cartridges and the larger rimmed rounds of the day. As modern bolt-action calibres gained ground, the 9x57R receded from new production, but it remains well established among shooters of classic German hunting rifles.

In practical use the 9x57R is above all a cartridge for the wood and the driven hunt. Its rimmed format suits break-action actions beautifully, which is why it is so often encountered in drillings and combination guns, where a single calibre must cover a wide range of hunting situations. The moderate pressures and velocities of the round match the demands of short and medium-range shooting, and its recoil remains comfortable in the lighter rifles in which it is typically chambered. Reloaders appreciate that the cartridge delivers reliable, well-controlled performance without requiring a powerful or specialised rifle.

The game spectrum of the 9x57R covers the classic Central European quarry: wild boar, red deer, roe deer, fallow deer and fox, depending on bullet construction and shot placement. Its bore diameter, essentially identical to the 9x57 Mauser family at roughly 0.356 to 0.358 inches (9.09-9.14 mm), allows the use of a broad selection of nine-millimetre projectiles, and handloaders typically work across the range from lighter to heavier bullets to suit their rifle and their preferred hunting situation. Properly loaded, the cartridge offers the penetration and terminal effect needed for clean, ethical kills on robust game at the distances at which it is normally used.

Technically the 9x57R is a rimmed, bottlenecked cartridge with a case capacity of approximately 64.2 grains of water and a CIP maximum average pressure of 280 MPa. These mild pressures make the round pleasant to shoot and friendly to older actions, provided the rifle is in sound condition. Reloaders of the 9x57R generally work with moderate powder charges behind nine-millimetre (.358) bullets, and brass can be formed from related rimmed cases or sourced from specialised suppliers. For the owner of a German drilling or combination gun who values tradition and practical effectiveness in equal measure, the 9x57R remains a rewarding and entirely serviceable cartridge.
