Caliber Overview

The 8x68 S Mauser, also known simply as the 8x68 S, is a high-performance, magnum-class centerfire rifle cartridge originating from Germany. Developed in 1939 by August Schüler, the 8x68 S was intended to meet the demands of hunters and marksmen seeking a powerful round capable of large game at extended distances. The cartridge was introduced by RWS, a prominent German ammunition manufacturer, and was quickly embraced by European hunters due to its flat trajectory and notable stopping power. After World War II, the 8x68 S gained greater acclaim, especially in Central Europe, where it filled the gap between traditional military surplus calibers and more specialized hunting cartridges. Its belted, bottleneck case design was ahead of its time, offering improved headspacing and strength suitable for magnum class cartridges.

The versatility of the 8x68 S makes it a favorite among reloaders and hunting enthusiasts. It is commonly chambered in bolt-action rifles, particularly those of European origin, and is well regarded for its balance between recoil and power. The round is favored for hunting in open fields and mountains, where long-range accuracy and energy retention are crucial. Its robust design allows it to handle high pressures, contributing to its reputation for consistent velocities and reliable performance under various field conditions. For reloaders, the cartridge’s spacious case allows ample room for a range of bullet weights and profiles, catering to specific hunting applications or personal preferences in custom loads.

In terms of practical application, the 8x68 S excels in big game hunting throughout Europe, Africa, and elsewhere. It is especially suited for challenging quarry such as wild boar, red deer, moose, and even African plains game including kudu and eland. Its flat trajectory and high energy transfer ensure quick, ethical kills at longer ranges, making it a reliable choice for hunts in mountainous or open terrain where shooting distances are often extended. Some hunters even opt for the 8x68 S when pursuing lighter dangerous game, provided local regulations permit its use, due to the cartridge’s excellent penetration and terminal performance.

Reloaders appreciate the 8x68 S for its broad selection of compatible bullet weights, typically ranging from 150 grains up to 250 grains. The most common factory loads fall between 180 and 200 grains, offering an optimal blend of velocity, accuracy, and sectional density for larger game animals. The cartridge’s relatively large, belted case provides consistent powder burn and efficient energy transfer, supporting muzzle velocities between 2,900 and 3,200 feet per second, depending on bullet weight and load. The caliber’s shoulder angle and neck length are designed to promote positive bullet alignment and secure case grip, features that further enhance its accuracy. Additionally, while recoil is significant, it remains manageable for experienced shooters, particularly when rifles are appropriately weighted or fitted with recoil mitigation systems. This makes the 8x68 S a top-tier choice for reloaders seeking magnum class performance in a versatile and time-proven European cartridge.
