7.82 Warbird Load Data

Caliber Overview

Developed by John Lazzeroni in the late 1990s, the 7.82 Warbird is a proprietary magnum rifle cartridge known for its extreme power and high velocity. Lazzeroni, already renowned for creating high-performance hunting cartridges, designed the 7.82 Warbird to offer magnum rifle enthusiasts a flat-shooting, long-range option for large game. Built as a .30 caliber cartridge, using a rebated-rim design, it was crafted to outperform many of the popular belted magnums of the time, such as the .300 Winchester Magnum and even the .300 Weatherby Magnum. With the Warbird, Lazzeroni pushed the boundaries of case capacity, ensuring massive powder charges for maximum velocity and energy delivery.

The primary application of the 7.82 Warbird is long-range big game hunting. Its impressive ballistics make it an excellent choice for hunting in open country where shots at extended distances are often the norm. The cartridge’s flat trajectory reduces the need for precise range estimation, a critical advantage when the target is hundreds of yards away. It is typically chambered in Lazzeroni's custom rifles, ensuring maximum performance and reliability for hunters who demand the utmost in power and reach. Its exceptional downrange energy also appeals to shooters serious about long-range target work, though its cost and recoil limits its usefulness to those experienced with magnum calibers.

Most hunters reaching for the 7.82 Warbird are after North American big game, especially elk, moose, caribou, and, in some cases, large bears. Its sheer power is often considered excessive for standard deer hunting, but for the largest, toughest species, the Warbird promises deep penetration and quick, humane kills at distances where lesser cartridges might struggle. African plains game, such as kudu or eland, also fall within the Warbird’s capabilities, provided the hunter observes all relevant legal and ethical considerations for cartridge selection.

Typical bullet weights for the 7.82 Warbird revolve around 150 to 200 grain projectiles, with most loading for big game favoring the heavier end – 180 and 200 grains, especially in premium bonded or monolithic bullet designs that maximize penetration and retain weight. With its huge case volume, the Warbird is capable of launching a 180-grain bullet well above 3400 feet-per-second, and lighter bullets can achieve even more impressive speeds. This high velocity results in significant recoil, a critical point for reloaders considering stock materials, recoil pads, and rifle weight for comfortable shooting. The cartridge’s rebated rim design also means that reliable feeding requires careful rifle setup, and load development often involves a focus on powder types that provide consistent pressures while making the most of the large case capacity. The 7.82 Warbird is a true specialist’s cartridge – an exciting project for reloaders seeking to push ballistic performance in the pursuit of the largest and farthest game.
