Caliber Overview

The 7mm SAW (Squad Automatic Weapon), also known as 7×49mm SAW, was an experimental military cartridge developed in the 1970s as part of the U.S. Army's Special Purpose Individual Weapon (SPIW) program. This intermediate rifle cartridge was designed to bridge the gap between standard rifle rounds and lighter assault rifle cartridges, offering improved ballistic performance in a compact package. Though the cartridge showed promise in testing, it never achieved military adoption and remains primarily a historical curiosity among cartridge collectors and firearms enthusiasts.

From a reloading perspective, the 7mm SAW presents unique challenges due to its limited commercial availability and specialized design. With a case capacity of approximately 55 grains of water and an exceptionally high maximum pressure of 415 MPa, this cartridge requires careful attention to pressure signs and precise component selection. Brass, bullets, and load data are scarce, making it suitable only for advanced handloaders with access to proper pressure testing equipment. The cartridge's compact dimensions and high-pressure design were optimized for military automatic weapons rather than sporting applications, which further limits its practical reloading appeal.
