The 6-284 caliber is a high-performance wildcat rifle cartridge created by necking down the .284 Winchester case to accept a 6mm (.243-inch) bullet. It emerged primarily in the benchrest and long-range competition communities, where shooters sought exceptional accuracy combined with very high velocities. By pairing the efficient, rebated-rim .284 Winchester case with sleek 6mm bullets, the 6-284 delivers flat trajectories, excellent wind resistance, and outstanding downrange performance.
One of the cartridge’s defining characteristics is its ability to push heavy-for-caliber 6mm bullets at extremely high speeds, often exceeding those of more common 6mm cartridges. This makes it particularly attractive for 600- and 1,000-yard competitions, where minimizing wind drift is critical. The rebated rim also allows the cartridge to function in standard bolt faces, simplifying custom rifle builds.
However, the performance of the 6-284 comes with tradeoffs. The cartridge is known for relatively short barrel life due to high velocities and intense throat erosion. It also requires careful handloading, as it has never been standardized by SAAMI and exists almost exclusively as a custom or wildcat round.
Overall, the 6-284 caliber represents a specialized solution for precision shooters who prioritize maximum ballistic performance and are willing to accept the maintenance and reloading demands that come with it.
