6.5 x 64 (Reb) Load Data

Caliber Overview

Introduced in 1917 by Wilhelm Brenneke, the 6.5x64mm (often referred to as 6.5x64 Brenneke or 6.5x64mm Reb) is a German rifle cartridge developed during a time of great technical innovation in Europe. Designed to deliver high velocity and flat trajectory, this caliber offered hunters and competitive shooters a powerful alternative to the commonly used cartridges of the early 20th century. Its rimless, bottlenecked case drew inspiration from contemporary military rounds but was optimally lengthened to accommodate the slender 6.5mm bullet, significantly increasing powder capacity compared to shorter cartridges. The “Reb” in its name sometimes designates “Rebated,” referencing experimental rim profiles, but the standard 6.5x64 remains a classic in the European sporting cartridge lineup.

The 6.5x64 Brenneke’s primary application has always been high-performance hunting and long-range shooting in open terrain. Renowned for its outstanding accuracy and impressive downrange energy, the 6.5x64 excels in mountainous regions, open fields, and forest edges where flat trajectory and minimal wind drift make a difference. While less common in North America, the cartridge enjoys enduring popularity among enthusiasts and reloaders across Europe, particularly for the pursuit of large and wary game in rugged conditions. The round is also regarded as a precision performer in the hands of target shooters who appreciate the balance of power and accuracy that 6.5mm cartridges are known for.

When discussing appropriate target species, the 6.5x64 is best known for its capabilities against medium to large European game animals. It is frequently chosen for hunting red deer, roe deer, chamois, and wild boar, and is also considered suitable for non-dangerous African plains game such as impala or springbok. The cartridge’s combination of velocity and efficient sectional density ensures deep penetration and controlled expansion, making it highly effective for ethical one-shot kills. Its moderate recoil allows for precise shot placement, an advantage particularly prized by hunters targeting wary or mobile game at longer distances.

In terms of reloading and bullet selection, the 6.5x64 supports a broad range of bullet weights, typically between 93 grains (6 grams) up to 160 grains (10.4 grams). However, the most common choices for hunting and long-range work hover around 120 to 140 grains (7.8 to 9.1 grams), balancing velocity and terminal performance. The cartridge’s high case capacity and excellent ballistic coefficients contribute to its ability to retain velocity and resist wind drift, making it suitable for shooting at extended ranges. With a case length of 64mm and a rimless design, the 6.5x64 can often optimize modern bullet designs, including ballistically efficient, long-ogive projectiles. For reloaders, brass is primarily available through European manufacturers, and proper care must be taken to match case dimensions and pressure ratings to firearm chamber specifications. Overall, the 6.5x64 Brenneke stands out as a venerable and effective choice for reloaders seeking precision, power, and historical prestige in a classic hunting cartridge.
