6.5 x 63 R Messner Mag. Load Data

Caliber Overview

The 6.5x63 R Messner Magnum is a high-powered, long-range rifle cartridge developed in Austria by Franz Messner in the late 20th century. Designed for big game hunting, it offers exceptional velocity, flat trajectory, and retained energy at extended ranges, making it particularly effective for large, tough game such as elk, moose, and even African plains game.

Based on a necked-down version of the .300 Winchester Magnum or similar large magnum cases, the 6.5x63 MM achieves high muzzle velocities—typically over 3,300 feet per second (fps)—with standard 6.5mm (.264 caliber) bullets. This velocity, combined with the high ballistic coefficients of 6.5mm projectiles, allows for outstanding accuracy and wind resistance at long range.

The cartridge is relatively rare and is typically used by experienced reloaders and precision shooters. Commercial ammunition is limited, and rifles chambered for it are often custom-built. Despite its niche status, it has a loyal following among European long-range hunters and competitive shooters who value its ballistic performance and versatility.

Overall, the 6.5x63 Messner Magnum is a powerful, flat-shooting cartridge optimized for long-range precision and hunting performance, though its use remains largely limited to enthusiasts and professionals.
