Introduced to the shooting community in 2007 through a collaboration between Federal Premium Ammunition and Ruger, the .327 Federal Magnum was developed to address the need for a small-diameter revolver cartridge that delivers significantly more power than the .32 H&R Magnum, and approaches the performance of the venerable .357 Magnum. By extending the case of the .32 H&R Magnum and increasing the chamber pressure levels substantially, engineers were able to pack impressive ballistics into a compact frame. The .327 Federal Magnum was initially chambered in Ruger’s SP101 platform, offering shooters increased capacity and less recoil compared to larger revolver cartridges. Since its debut, the .327 Federal Magnum has gained traction among both handgun enthusiasts and reloading aficionados who appreciate its versatility.

The .327 Federal Magnum’s primary applications span from personal defense and concealed carry to field use for small to medium game hunting. Its up-to-6-round revolver capacity, compared to typically five rounds in .357 Magnum snub-nosed revolvers, makes it a compelling option for those seeking a balance of increased firepower and manageable recoil. This caliber excels in light, compact revolvers as well as in lever-action carbines, broadening its utility for a range of shooters. Reloaders often appreciate the caliber’s wide pressure curve, which supports flexible handloading options for everything from mild target loads to full-power defense rounds. The manageable recoil, even at maximum loads, makes it suitable for both new and experienced shooters.

When it comes to target species, the .327 Federal Magnum is often used for small game such as rabbits and squirrels, thanks to its flat trajectory and sufficient terminal ballistics with lighter bullets. It also proves effective on pests and varmints like raccoons and coyotes, particularly with heavier bullet selections. With proper bullet choice, the .327 can be responsibly used on larger small game and even the occasional deer at close range, making it informative for reloaders interested in a do-it-all field cartridge. Notably, some manufacturers offer revolvers chambered in .327 that can also safely fire .32 H&R Magnum, .32 S&W Long, and .32 S&W Short, adding further versatility and enabling reloaders to make use of a broader spectrum of brass and bullets.

Typical bullet weights for the .327 Federal Magnum range from 85 to 130 grains. Bullets in the 85–100 grain spectrum favor flatter trajectories and higher velocities, making them ideal for target shooting, small game hunting, and self-defense. Heavier bullets, such as those weighing 115 or 130 grains, deliver deeper penetration and ensure reliable performance on larger varmints or in defensive scenarios against tougher threats. Muzzle velocities typically fall between 1,300 and 1,500 feet per second with factory loads, though handloaders may tailor performance either for reduced recoil or maximum energy, as needed. The cartridge uses a rimmed, straight-walled case, which is straightforward to reload and works well with traditional revolver handloading equipment. The .327 Federal Magnum strikes a balance between capacity, performance, and shootability, making it an attractive choice for reloaders seeking a versatile and efficient revolver caliber.
