The .25 Creedmoor is a precision rifle cartridge that originated as a wildcat variant of the popular 6.5 Creedmoor. Developed by necking down the 6.5mm case to accept .257-inch (6.53 mm) diameter bullets, the .25 Creedmoor was designed to combine the excellent case efficiency of the Creedmoor platform with the high ballistic coefficients available in modern .25 caliber projectiles.
Initially popularized among custom rifle builders and long-range enthusiasts, the .25 Creedmoor quickly earned a reputation for its flat trajectory, excellent velocity retention, and manageable recoil, making it highly effective for both target shooting and medium-sized game hunting. Typical loads push 110- to 115-grain bullets at speeds exceeding 3000 feet per second, offering impressive downrange performance.
Due to growing popularity and demonstrated performance, the .25 Creedmoor has been officially accepted by SAAMI (Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute), formalizing its dimensions and ensuring standardized manufacturing. This move marks a major milestone, paving the way for broader commercial availability of rifles, brass, and factory ammunition.
With a case capacity around 52.3 grains of water, the .25 Creedmoor maintains a nearly ideal balance between speed, barrel life, and efficiency, sitting comfortably between the smaller .243 Winchester and the larger 6.5 Creedmoor in the ballistic spectrum.
