- The 7.62 UKM is a high-powered rifle cartridge developed in Great Britain in the early 1950s. It was designed to be used in machine guns, light machine guns and rifles. The design was based off of the .303 British round, but with improved performance due to its larger volume and higher velocity.
The 7.62 UKM utilizes a heavy 175 grain copper-jacketed FMJ bullet which produces 2,800 feet per second at the muzzle with an energy level of 3,040 ft/lbs. This makes it one of the most powerful rounds available for use in British-made firearms.
The 7.62 UKM has seen action all across the world during several wars, including being used by both sides during the Vietnam War and more recently by Saudi Arabian forces in Yemen’s civil war. It is still heavily utilized today in numerous countries due to its accuracy and lethality at range – making it desirable for military and police forces alike as a designated marksman's round or as a sniper's weapon platform cartridge of choice given its superior long-range ballistics capabilities compared to other rounds like the 5.45x39mm Russian Cartridge or 7.62x51mm NATO rounds commonly found on modern battlefields today. #1
