The 5.6x61R SE v. Hofe cartridge is a relatively obscure European hunting cartridge that was developed by German gunsmith Sebastian Ernst von Hofe in the early 20th century. The cartridge is based on a modified 8x57mm Mauser case that has been necked down to accept a .22 caliber bullet. The cartridge has a case length of 61mm (2.402 inches) and is a rimmed cartridge, which means it is primarily designed for use in break-action rifles and combination guns. It typically uses a 55 grain bullet and is loaded to produce muzzle velocities of around 3,100 feet per second, giving it a flat trajectory and excellent long-range performance. The 5.6x61R SE v. Hofe cartridge is not as widely used as some other European hunting cartridges, such as the 6.5x55mm or 7x57mm Mauser, but is still popular among some hunters and shooters. It is primarily used for hunting medium to large-sized game, such as deer and wild boar, at ranges of up to 300 yards.
