The 7.5×54mm French (7,5×54 MAS) cartridge is a military rifle round developed by France in the late 1920s and officially adopted in 1929. It was designed to replace the older 8×50mmR Lebel round, which was outdated due to its rimmed case and limited suitability for modern magazine-fed rifles. The 7.5×54mm is a rimless, bottlenecked cartridge engineered to offer improved reliability, ballistics, and feeding characteristics in automatic and semi-automatic weapons.
The round was prominently used in French service rifles such as the MAS-36, MAS-49, and MAS-49/56, as well as in several machine guns including the FM 24/29 light machine gun. Typical military loads fired a 139–140 grain full metal jacket bullet at velocities around 2,600–2,800 fps, providing effective accuracy and terminal performance for mid-20th-century battlefield requirements.
Ballistically, the 7.5×54mm French is comparable to other full-power service cartridges like the .308 Winchester/7.62×51 NATO, though slightly less powerful. It was considered highly effective and controllable, with good long-range capability and relatively mild recoil for its class.
Although replaced by 5.56×45 NATO in French service in the late 20th century, the 7.5×54mm remains valued among collectors, historical shooters, and enthusiasts of classic French military rifles.
