The 7mm Backcountry is a new hunting cartridge introduced by Federal Premium, built around its patented Peak Alloy case technology — a one-piece, high-strength steel alloy case (rather than traditional brass) originally developed in response to U.S. military requirements. This case is able to withstand higher pressures than traditional brass alloys, with the objective of obtaining higher muzzle velocities from short-barreled rifles. While most brass cases top out around 65,000 psi under SAAMI limits, the Peak Alloy steel case can push to 80,000 psi. WikipediaAmerican Hunter
Dimensionally, the cartridge uses a rimless design with a .473-inch case head (shared with .30-06 and 7x57 Mauser), a case length of 2.417 inches, and a maximum overall length of 3.540 inches, fitting a standard long-action receiver. Federal launched it with loads including a 155-grain Terminal Ascent (3,150 fps from a 20-inch barrel, G1 BC .586), a 170-grain Terminal Ascent (3,000 fps, G1 BC .645), and a 175-grain Fusion Tipped (2,975 fps, G1 BC .575), plus a 195-grain Berger Elite Hunter load. SAAMI accepted it as a standardized cartridge in January 2025, though it isn't yet C.I.P.-certified, so it remains a wildcat cartridge in Europe. Reloading is possible but requires specific tooling and data — worth flagging given your ApexLOAD PRO audience, since standard dies and brass-case procedures don't directly apply.
