The .20 BR (Bench Rest) is a wildcat cartridge that traces its lineage to the respected .22 BR Remington, itself a derivative of the .308 Winchester case. First appearing in the early 2000s, the .20 BR emerged as competitive shooters and varmint hunters sought superior ballistic coefficients and flatter trajectories in smaller calibers. With advancements in custom barrel making and bullet design, tinkerers and precision shooters started necking down the venerable .22 BR to accept .204 caliber (5mm) projectiles, ultimately creating the .20 BR. Although it has never been a factory-standard cartridge, the .20 BR has found a strong following among reloaders and enthusiasts who load for accuracy and performance rather than mainstream availability.

The .20 BR is primarily known for its stellar performance in both benchrest shooting and varmint hunting. With its efficient, short, and fat case design, the .20 BR delivers exceptional accuracy at distances common to both disciplines. For benchrest competitors, the caliber’s ability to achieve high velocities with minimal recoil and low wind drift makes it a favorite for 100- to 300-yard matches. On the other hand, varmint shooters appreciate its flat trajectory and explosive terminal performance when hunting small targets such as groundhogs, prairie dogs, and other pests at extended ranges. The .20 BR’s combination of speed, precision, and manageable recoil make it an attractive choice for shooters seeking every possible edge in tiny-group shooting or ethical, effective varmint dispatching.

Varmint species are the primary targets for the .20 BR. Its high-velocity projectiles excel at taking down small game with authority while minimizing pelt damage, which is an advantage for hunters who may want to preserve fur. While not generally recommended for medium or large game due to its small, lightweight bullets, the .20 BR’s powerful impact on varmints like prairie dogs, ground squirrels, and marmots is well documented. The round’s flat trajectory allows for easier target acquisition and reduced need for hold-over at varied distances—an ideal feature when hunting at fluctuating ranges or across windy plains.

Reloaders interested in the .20 BR typically look for bullets in the 32- to 40-grain weight range, with 39- or 40-grain offerings being the most common for maximizing ballistic coefficient and downrange performance. The fat body of the .20 BR case provides consistent powder ignition and outstanding efficiency, helping shooters achieve impressively tight groupings. Case capacity and pressure characteristics allow for safe, reliable reloading while extracting maximum performance from quality custom barrels. With its wildcat status, the .20 BR is best suited to reloaders willing to form their own brass and tailor loads for specific rifles, making it both a rewarding project and a high-performance tool for those invested in precision small-caliber shooting.
