The .22 Hornet, originally developed in the 1930s, is a small-caliber centerfire cartridge known for its mild recoil and excellent accuracy in varmint hunting and small-game applications. While not traditionally associated with subsonic performance, the .22 Hornet can be adapted for subsonic loads, offering unique advantages in quiet, low-recoil shooting with careful reloading practices. Due to its relatively small case capacity and .224" bullet diameter, the .22 Hornet is one of the more challenging calibers to load subsonically, but it remains viable for those seeking stealth in pest control or suppressed plinking.

Subsonic .22 Hornet loads typically feature heavy-for-caliber bullets in the 55 to 60 grain range to maximize energy and stability at low velocities (~950–1,050 fps). However, most factory rifles in .22 Hornet come with a 1:14 twist rate, which may struggle to stabilize these heavier bullets. Therefore, bullet selection must carefully match the barrel's twist rate—sometimes requiring lighter projectiles like 45–50 grain soft points or hollow points if stability becomes an issue.

For subsonic handloads, fast-burning powders such as Trail Boss, Hodgdon TiteGroup, or Accurate No. 9 are commonly used due to their ability to produce consistent velocities in low-volume charge weights. Loads must be tested carefully to avoid squib loads or incomplete powder burn, both of which are concerns when loading below standard pressures.

In a suppressed platform, the .22 Hornet offers impressively low noise and minimal recoil, making it an attractive option for quiet shooting on rural properties or small game dispatch. However, it is important to note that subsonic .22 Hornet loads may not cycle semi-automatic actions and are best suited for bolt-action rifles. While niche, the subsonic .22 Hornet offers a unique blend of performance for shooters prioritizing stealth, accuracy, and historical cartridge charm.
