The 9.3x72R is a classic German hunting cartridge developed in the late 19th century, primarily designed for use in break-action rifles such as combination guns and double rifles. Originally created for medium to large game like wild boar and red deer, it became especially popular in central Europe, particularly in forested regions where shots are taken at relatively short ranges.

The cartridge features a rimmed, bottlenecked case and typically fires a bullet weighing around 285 to 293 grains. While it has relatively modest muzzle velocity—usually in the 2,100 to 2,300 feet per second range—its heavy bullet and large caliber (.366 inches) deliver significant energy, offering deep penetration and effective stopping power. Despite its age, the 9.3x72R remains valued for its mild recoil, low chamber pressure, and effectiveness in traditional hunting rifles.

Today, it’s mostly used by enthusiasts and hunters who favor older firearms or classic European hunting traditions. Ammunition is still commercially produced, though in limited quantities, mainly by European manufacturers such as RWS or Sellier & Bellot. Its continued use underscores its proven performance and the enduring appeal of traditional hunting cartridges.
