The 5.7x28mm cartridge, often simply called the 5.7, is a modern rimless, bottlenecked intermediate cartridge that was developed by the Belgian company FN Herstal in the late 1980s. Its inception was a direct response to NATO's request for a replacement for the 9x19mm Parabellum, seeking a light, small-caliber, high-velocity round for use in personal defense weapons (PDWs) and submachine guns. The 5.7x28mm was officially introduced in 1993 alongside the FN P90 PDW and FN Five-seveN pistol. Its design intentions were to provide superior body armor penetration, flatter trajectory, and reduced recoil, compared to traditional 9mm rounds. Since then, the 5.7x28 has seen gradual adoption in military and law enforcement applications around the world, and it has made a notable entrance into the civilian market, especially as manufacturers like Ruger and KelTec introduced compatible firearms.

Applications for the 5.7x28mm go beyond military and police use, as the cartridge has garnered popularity among civilian shooters for self-defense, varmint hunting, and recreational target shooting. Due to its high velocity, low recoil, and armor-piercing capabilities (in military loads), it is prized in competitive shooting circuits and by those who value fast follow-up shots. Additionally, the cartridge’s lightweight design allows for higher magazine capacities, a considerable advantage in both tactical and sporting situations. For reloaders, the 5.7x28mm offers a unique platform that combines high-velocity performance with easy handling, making it an intriguing caliber for those interested in experimenting with different projectile types and weights, although the small case size can make handloading a precision exercise.

The 5.7x28mm is primarily favored for targeting small varmints and predators such as foxes, coyotes, groundhogs, and prairie dogs. The high velocity and frangible nature of most commercial 5.7 bullets result in rapid expansion and minimal risk of over-penetration, which is advantageous for pest control in semi-urban or farm environments. Since its terminal ballistics focus on deliverable energy with minimal recoil, it is less suitable for larger game, and is not typically used for medium or big game hunting. Its effectiveness for home defense is often debated, but the cartridge’s low recoil and high capacity offer advantages over traditional handgun calibers in close-quarters scenarios.

Typical bullet weights for the 5.7x28mm range from 27 to 40 grains, with most commercial offerings featuring projectiles in the 28-40 grain range. The cartridge can achieve muzzle velocities up to 2,300 feet per second (fps) with lighter loads, depending on barrel length, making it significantly faster than most standard handgun calibers. The bottleneck cartridge shape aids reliable feeding in both pistols and carbines. The 5.7x28mm is also notable for its relatively flat trajectory out to 100 meters and its low felt recoil impulse, characteristics prized by accuracy enthusiasts and those using compact firearms. However, reloaders should be aware that the small case size and high operating pressures necessitate meticulous case inspection and careful attention to detail in the reloading process to ensure safety and optimal performance.
