It is a popular big game cartridge that is primarily used for hunting large, dangerous game in Africa.The .404 Rimless Nitro Express cartridge features a rimless brass case with a bullet diameter of .423 inches (10.74 mm) and a case length of 2.90 inches (73.66 mm). It typically uses a 400- to 450-grain (26 to 29 g) bullet propelled by a smokeless powder charge, which gives it a muzzle velocity of around 2,200 to 2,400 feet per second (670 to 730 meters per second) and a muzzle energy of around 4,500 to 5,000 foot-pounds (6,100 to 6,800 joules).The .404 Jeffery cartridge was designed to provide hunters with a cartridge that had similar ballistics to the .416 Rigby cartridge, but with a smaller and lighter package that could be used in a variety of firearms, including bolt-action rifles and double rifles.
